Here is a piece I created using Adobe Photoshop. This photo collage is inspired by the popular cosmetic company called Girlactik, which is popular in the beauty community due to their high quality and reasonably priced lip products.
I decided to take the title of the company and use the play on the word "galactic," to be the focus of the collage. I chose the focus of the company, lipsticks, and portrayed it through the large lips which are the focus of the work. These images were found through company websites, as well as Google images. The glitter and paint on the lips seems a bit like a galaxy. In the background, I wanted to include a galaxy but did not like the way a real galaxy appeared. Instead, I found a photo of a loose shimmery pigment and it immediately caught my eye as it can be easily interpreted as a galaxy, yet also ties in the overall theme of cosmetics. I also wanted to include a Dior blush brush because I thought the photo needed a bit more balance at the bottom right, as well as something parallel to the lipstick dripping down in order to bring more focus to that area of the work.
Because the cosmetic industry was my main inspiration for this project, I wanted to incorporate bright colors, with a strong contrast between the black background and the strong colors of the lips and loose pink pigment. I used the sharpening tool to define the handle of the Dior makeup brush, so that it would stand out from the black background. I also tried incorporating movement into the piece by including the dripping lipstick, as well as the loose pigment floating around the left of the collage so that the viewers' eyes could easily move around the piece. The top of the hierarchy in this piece are definitely the lips, with the pigment coming in second and the brush coming in third. The alignment of this piece is well balanced, with images to the left, right and center.
Using Photoshop for the first time was somewhat difficult, but I utilized many YouTube tutorials to guide me through each step to create the overall graphic. There is still so much to learn about Photoshop and I now know the fundamentals of the program, so I am very excited to explore more of the program!
